Networks and Connectivity

PT

1. Wireless Networks (eduroam)

The Iscte wireless network covers practically the entire campus and exclusively uses the SSID eduroam.

What is eduroam?

Eduroam (education roaming) is an international Wi‑Fi access service created for educational and research institutions:

    • Available in more than 100 countries;
    • Uses secure authentication and encryption;
    • Allows automatic access at other participating institutions.

Advantages

    • Continuous and secure connection at any participating institution;
    • A single account (Iscte) for global access;
    • WPA/WPA2/WPA3‑Enterprise encryption.

Configuration

On recent devices, it is enough to:

  1. Connect to the SSID eduroam.
  2. Enter the Iscte username (e.g., xxnes@iscte‑iul.pt) and the respective password.

The official app geteduroam can also be used for automatic configuration.

ISCTE’s wired network provides high stability and performance connectivity through the campus’s physical data infrastructure.

Usage rules

    • The connection is intended for terminal equipment (PCs, printers, etc.).
    • Connecting network equipment (routers, switches, repeaters) is not allowed.

This access is ideal for:

    • Fixed workstations,
    • Laboratories,
    • Equipment that requires higher performance or stability.

What is it for?

    • Secure remote access as if you were on campus;
    • Access to scientific databases contracted by Iscte;
    • Access to remote workstations (staff only);
    • Protection of traffic on public or insecure networks.

Requirements

    • Have an active affiliation with Iscte;
    • Have Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) configured (mandatory).

Advantages

    • Encrypted traffic;
    • Enhanced privacy;
    • Identity protection;
    • Ability to bypass location restrictions.
