Can I connect multiple devices at the same time?
Yes. You can connect multiple devices to eduroam at the same time, provided they remain within the limits set by Iscte’s IT services and comply with the usage policies.
Can I use a VPN, streaming services, or other services?
Yes. eduroam allows you to use services such as VPNs, streaming platforms, and other applications, provided that your use complies with Iscte’s IT service rules and policies and applicable laws.
Are there any speed or data limits?
The use of eduroam at Iscte is subject to the acceptable use policies for IT services and the technical limitations of the network infrastructure. The service is primarily intended for academic, scientific, and institutional activities.
What information is recorded?
As part of the operation of eduroam, the following technical information may be recorded:
- User identifier (anonymized when roaming).
- Date and time of connection.
- Home institution.
This data is used exclusively for security, technical auditing, and user support purposes, in compliance with applicable data protection regulations.
Can Iscte or the institution I’m visiting see my internet traffic?
The content of communications (such as visited pages, messages, or files) is not monitored.
Authentication and network access respect user privacy.
Only minimal technical data is collected, strictly necessary for security, network management, and troubleshooting purposes, in accordance with applicable law.
Is my data encrypted?
Yes. All data traffic between your device and the eduroam access point is encrypted, preventing third parties from intercepting or reading the information transmitted over the wireless network.
Is eduroam safe?
Yes. eduroam is a secure Internet access service that uses robust authentication and encryption methods based on the WPA2/WPA3 Enterprise standards.
These mechanisms ensure that only users with valid credentials can access the network and that communications are protected against unauthorized access.
At Iscte, using eduroam is the recommended option for wireless network access, precisely because of the high levels of security it provides.
Do I need to reconfigure eduroam if I change my password?
Yes. Whenever you change the password for your Iscte institutional credentials, you must update the eduroam settings on all devices where the network is configured. Otherwise, authentication will fail and you will not be able to access eduroam.

- Select the eduroam network;
- Choose the option to forget or remove the network.
After removal, we recommend reconfiguring eduroam.
I’m connected to eduroam but I don’t have Internet access. What should I do?
If your device shows that it is connected to eduroam but you do not have Internet access, check the following:
- Whether your device has obtained a valid IP address
The absence of an IP address may indicate an authentication or configuration issue. - Whether a VPN is active
Some VPNs may interfere with access to the eduroam network, preventing you from connecting to the Internet.
- Whether your device has obtained a valid IP address
If the problem persists after these checks, please contact Iscte IT support, specifying the type of device and the operating system used.
Why am I constantly being asked to enter my password?
This behavior may indicate:
- Incorrect or expired institutional credentials;
A password that was recently changed but not updated on the device; - An incorrect eduroam profile configuration.
- Incorrect or expired institutional credentials;
To resolve the issue, we recommend removing the existing configuration and reconfiguring eduroam, ensuring that the credentials are correct and up to date.
What should you do if the connection fails after an operating system update?
After updating your operating system (Windows, macOS, Android, or iOS), you may experience incompatibilities with your previous eduroam settings.
In such cases, we recommend:
- Removing the eduroam network from your device’s Wi-Fi settings;
- Re-configuring eduroam.
Why can’t I connect to eduroam?
There are several common reasons why you might be unable to connect to eduroam, including:
- Incorrect or outdated password
If Iscte’s institutional password has been changed recently, you must update this information on all devices where eduroam is configured. - Incorrectly entered username
The username must always be entered in its full format (e.g., xxnes@iscte-iul.pt). Omitting the domain will prevent authentication. - Outdated or incorrect eduroam configuration
Outdated configurations, especially following security changes or operating system updates, can cause connection failures. - Incorrect device date and time
An incorrect date or time on the device may prevent the validation of the security certificates used by eduroam.
- Incorrect or outdated password
In many cases, removing the existing configuration and reconfiguring eduroam resolves the problem.
What should you do if you forget your login credentials?
If you forget your username or institutional password, you must reset your credentials through Iscte’s IT services.
You can recover your password using Iscte’s official account management tools. If you are unable to reset your password or if your account is locked or inactive, you should contact Iscte IT Support for assistance.
Until your credentials are restored or updated, you will not be able to access eduroam or other Iscte digital services.
After changing your password, we recommend updating your eduroam settings on all devices where it is configured.
What credentials should I use to access eduroam?
To access eduroam, you must use your Iscte institutional credentials—that is, the username and password associated with your institutional account.
The username must be entered in full, including the domain (e.g., xxnes@iscte-iul.pt).
These credentials are the same ones you use to access Iscte’s digital services, such as institutional email, academic platforms, and other internal systems. The credentials allow for secure authentication both on the Iscte campus and at other institutions participating in eduroam, in Portugal or abroad.
If your credentials are incorrect, expired, or inactive, you will not be able to access eduroam; you will need to update them or contact Iscte’s IT support services.
Can I use eduroam outside of Iscte?
Yes. Iscte users can use eduroam at any participating institution, in Portugal and abroad, using their Iscte institutional credentials. There is no need to create new accounts or request temporary access.
Whenever you are at a university, institute, or research center participating in eduroam, your device can automatically connect to the network, provided it is correctly configured. This service facilitates academic mobility, allowing secure Internet access during classes, conferences, exchanges, research missions, or other academic activities.
Similarly, users from other participating institutions can also use eduroam when visiting Iscte campuses, using the credentials from their home institution.
